Dirty Microbe: another one bites the dust?

guest- posted by David on August 16th, 2007 in Discussions
So, what do you guys think of this whole mess with Dirty Microbe? Maybe this is old news, but I actually just found out about this last night, and I was surprised as well.

In short, loads of customers are complaining that they ordered shirts two months ago or so, were told the shirts would ship in about a week, had their cards charged immediately, and then...nothing. Customer service e-mails are going largely unanswered, every hundredth e-mail or Facebook message sent to the founder/owner/something Christian von Kleist gets answered with an impotent response of "oh dag, my staff is supposed to take care of that, have 15% off our shirts for life, I'll make sure that gets sent ASAP".

Tshirt Island has links to loads of complaints and breaks it down pretty nicely.

Of course, I'm going to feel like kind of a jerk if this ends up having gone down due to some horrific tragedy that wiped out their entire staff, but considering that a lot of them still seem to be logging on to their MySpace accounts, I doubt it.

CRAP, NOW WHERE WILL I BUY T-SHIRTS WITH HILARIOUS JOKES ON THEM??

It's pretty crappy, but because Christian is replying occasionally to things, it seems like there probably was no tragedy... he should at least not LIE in his replies. The responsible thing would have been to close down the website and then the business, rather than just taking people's money. I've been trying to find out about their company, but there isn't much... they go (or used to go?) to the University of Florida, if its proximity to the address they list on their website is any guide. White Pages, on the other hand, lists them at a different address...

I didn't meant to post that yet! Continued...

White Pages, on the other hand, lists them at a different address (still in Gainesville, Florida). If I were any of the people who have gotten shafted by Dirty Microbe, I'd call them at (352) 378-0423.

That's a pretty shitty thing to do to people. I've occasionally gotten behind on orders, but I always let people know what's going on and especially get their stuff out to them.

Not cool.

word on the street is, all their listed numbers have been disconnected. I think everyone's just calling their credit card companies now to do chargebacks.

Yeah, I see now that their numbers have been disconnected. Pretty weak.

yeah, it seems so weird that this could go down with a company that seemed pretty reputable and was getting good press.

A bit strange, all that. I was often tempted to order one of their shirts, they're really a good laugh. However, there is still much more out there, like T-shirt Hell or NoiseBot.com, or else there are some nice shirts on Shirtcity.com or Cafépress. So the world is not going to run short of fun T-Shirts.

It is a strange situation, DM actually sponsored a HYA competition, and it would be quite a strange way to screw people out of money by giving away tees, that and giving me a review tee. Obviously that sent more interest their way, but it does seem like an unnecessary step in fooling people into buying tees that wouldn't arrive.
